Meet Dr. de Castro

Dr. de Castro-Abeger (de Castro for short) is a board certified ophthalmologist with the American Board of Ophthalmology. He further sub-specializes as a pediatric ophthalmologist and adult strabismus specialist. A native to Los Angeles, he grew up playing water polo, swimming and surfing.  He then attended medical school at Tufts University and obtained a Masters of Business Administration at Brandeis University. He then completed an Ophthalmology residency followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at Vanderbilt Eye Institute in Nashville, TN.

He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and a Member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS). He serves on several national committees including the Young Ophthalmologist Committee (AAO) and the Legislative Affairs Committee (AAPOS). Locally, he is on Los Angeles Society of Ophthalmology Board as well as the Young Ophthalmology Committee as part of CAEPS (California Eye Physicians and Surgeons).

He is an expert in the medical and surgical treatment of pediatric eye diseases including amblyopia, strabismus (eye misalignment), blocked tear ducts, pediatiric eyelid problems and pediatric cataracts. Dr. de Castro believes in patient advocacy and patient education and he aims for all of his patients and their families to leave their visit feeling empowered and knowledgeable about their eye condition (and having had a little fun!).

He is excited to be back in his native Southern California servicing the children of Los Angeles. He currently works part-time with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where he teaches residents and fellows. When not in clinic or surgery, he can be found spending time with his wife, daughter and the rest of his extended family. His hobbies outside of medicine include surfing, swimming, golf and hiking.
